Well we have got back from a gloriously sunny day at Silverstone, the first time I actually remember in my entire life being warm there! Having travelled down with The Chairman in his 3 litre 1925 ‘Blue Label’ Bentley.
We arrived at Silverstone to find they had moved the front entrance around 100 yards to the left of the old main entrance. After successfully negotiating the mini roundabouts and across the old bridge. We made our way to the pits. Much to The Chairman’s surprise they had no knocked down the pits so we were able to find a garage and start race preparing the car.
Once this was done we set off to record the day’s events. We found spot and started taking some shots of the Benjy’s merchandise from the club shop and then on to the cars.
After taking some good shots from inside the paddock we ventured out on to the pit wall in time to see the Exp Speed 8 hurtle past us at break neck speed. After a quick word with a friendly Marshall, who gave us some tips on how to get the best shots and were to sign on, we went to Race Control.
We were promptly issued with a press pass which allowed us to photograph on more exclusive areas of the track. Then we went back to the racing the first race, The All comers Handicap, was just starting.
This stopped after around 4 laps with a spectacular spin as car number 104, a silver Alvis Special driven by Geoffrey O’Connell, seized its gear box on the Back Straight. Red flags went out and unfortunately the race was stopped.
This was not to be the last racing casualty of the day however. The Bentley Turbo R threw a piston in the morning practice session, machines; it seemed did not favour the hotter weather.
Later in the day after some very interesting racing of which we managed to capture most of which on film we arrived at Brooklands Just in time for the digital camera to decide that it would no longer function. This didn’t worry us to much as we had several back up cameras. The Digital stills from the film camera came out very nicely to.
We returned back to the pits to find that sadly ‘Old Mother Gun’ had also been having its own mechanical difficulties, and broken its clutch.
After picking up back up cameras we headed to the out side of the circuit to get some film and shots of the racing. We finished the day and indeed several rolls of film quite exhausted. Thank you, to the Benjy’s team who allowed us to traipse around whilst they were busily preparing to race and I hope you like the Photographs, and Films.
